Jefferson City and Columbia each have their separate, distinct appeal. From the gleaming dome of its Capitol above the treetops to attractions such as Carnahan Memorial Gardens, Jefferson City showcases a one-of-a-kind metropolitan welcome, with America's longest river -- the Missouri -- flowing through town. Daniel Boone's son was a city planner on this turf where the Confederacy and the Union once fought for a foothold. Outdoors attractions nearby include the Katy Trail Hiking / Biking State Park, and the Runge Nature Center, with miles of hiking trails and a 60-foot tower for panoramic views. Cultural Arts include the Jefferson City Symphony and Scene One. Other attractions include the Cole County Historical Museum, the Missouri Veterans Memorial, and the Missouri Veterinary Museum, the only such facility in the nation devoted solely to animal medicine. The circa 1830s Lohman Building on Jefferson Street at the Jefferson Landing State Historic Site now houses exhibits on 19th century transportation. South of Jefferson City, the Lake of the Ozarks is one of America's largest man-made lakes. For bargain hunters, Jefferson City has become favored shopping area, offering both chains as well as specialty stores. Jefferson City accommodations range from family owned motels to national brand hotels. Columbia, to the north and home of the University of Missouri, also is known for its eclectic mix of restaurants, shops, art galleries, music venues, sporting events, and historic architecture. In Columbia, what's known as The District includes movies in the park, carriage rides, free concerts and year around family fun including Twilight Festival, Living Windows Festival, Columbia Festival of the Arts, the Pub Crawl and First Night Columbia. Accommodations in both Jefferson City and Columbia range from inns and motels to top-rung hotels.
